Foster got Flat Stanley in the mail from his cousin Hunter. We decided to take Stanley out for crawfish and Cajun dancin'!
Foster, Stanley, and Maya posing by the very fierce looking alligator outside of the restaurant. Maya is trying to mimic the fierceness.
Foster loves crawfish! This was his second time eating the little "mud bugs", as they are called here. I think he thinks it is fun to dismember his dinner before eating it. Should I be worried about this? This looks like a lot of food, but it is very deceptive. It is a lot of work to peal one and you only get about half a bite.
Flat Stanley being attacked by a mutant crawfish.
Foster, Maya, Ella, and me waiting to take a turn on the dance floor. At a lot of the Cajun restaurants here, they have live music and dancing. Especially right now, as it is Mardi Gras time and also crawfish season.
Foster and Flat Stanley posing with the band. Pretty exciting stuff. I think that Flat Stanley will have quite the story to tell when we get him back to Hunter. Also, as a bonus, he will go back smelling of dead fish.
Coming soon: Flat Stanley goes to a Mardi Gras parade! We'll be sure to have a talk with him about approriate behavior at the parade. No flashing allowed. With any luck, he will get enough beads to take back to the class.
We are enjoying being here and learning about this crazy Cajun culture! It has been very interesting!

Foster is sure looking grown-up! Wow, that does look like a lot of "mud bugs"! :) What do they taste like? Your new home looks like a lot fun-alligators & dancing, you can't find that in Lynden! :o)
Pictures of the people - cute. Pictures of the crawfish - ughhhh. That does not looke appetizing at all. In fact, it makes me a little queazy.
Lydia: People say that crawfish taste a lot like shrimp. I disagree. I think they taste okay but they have to be dipped in a lot of special sauce. (Not sure what the sauce is.) Some friends wanted to take us out for crawfish a couple of weeks ago. I agreed, assuming there would be other things on the menu. There weren't. It took me a full ten minutes to get up the nerve to touch one, and when I finally was able to, I only did it because I didn't want to offend them. If they would even get rid of the antenna...not to mention the eyeballs and claws. You actually have to separate the top part of the body from the tail. You only eat the tail and it is a lot of dirty, disgusting work for what you get. People here love them and are really fast at pealing them. Also, it doesn't hurt that they are usually drunk while doing it...
Jenni: I agree. The first time we went out to a crawfish place here, I thought I was going to die. It just looks like a huge pile of carcasses. And the pictures don't show how Foster thinks it's funny to hold the crawfish and pretend they are walking around on the table.
p.s. Foster and Jon actually shared all that crawfish. It was five pounds (which really isn't that much) and it costs roughly $30.00... kind've a waste in my opinion.
What an adventure for flat stanley! You've filled his life with such excitement lol...He's lucky he didn't have to ingest those lil "mud bugs" ewwww...
Holy moly! You are totally in a different world! How fun!
Hey?!
What else can be said.
